Greater Portland Dachshund Club

The Dachshund

Low to the ground, long in body and short of leg!

Dachshunds originated in Germany and 54 were registered in the German all breed stud book in 1840.  They were originally bred for hunting badgers, hence the name Dachshund which means badger dog.   Dachshunds were recognized as a breed in America in 1885.  Dachshunds come in 3 different coat varieties - Smooth, Long and Wire and 2 sizes- standard and miniature.  The Longhaired and Wirehaired varieties were bred for hunting in   harsher terrain conditions.  The miniatures were developed due to the rise of the rabbit population in Germany in the 1800’s.

Dachshunds are clever, lively, courageous and intelligent with an excellent nose for tracking and hunting.  Their versatility makes them adaptable to many environments and many activities they can enjoy with their owners.  They excel in field trials tracking rabbits, earth dog tracking in tunnels, scent work competitions, barn hunts, obedience, rally, agility and compete in conformation dog shows.

About the Club

The Greater Portland Dachshund Club is comprised of members who love their dachshunds and participate in many of the above activities with them.  The Club supports and promotes the breed.  GPDC sponsors field trials, earthdog tests and dachshund specialty conformation shows in the greater Portland region.  Members participate in “Meet the Breeds” at local All Breed shows and  the club donates to causes supporting dog related needs.  As well, a number of members breed dachshunds aspiring to meet the AKC breed standard – the accepted description of ideal structure, movement and temperament for our breed.  The club is governed by the American Kennel Club and the Dachshund Club of America.
